Statement by Tim Ragan, Owner
So, why is it called “career constructors“? Easy. After serving for over 2 decades as a traditional employee in various global organizations, another 14 years and counting as a fully independent worker, and with almost 7 years as a career company owner under my belt having supported several hundred clients, I strongly believe that a career is something that can and should be deliberately constructed. For any kind of sustainable career success in this volatile 21st century of ours, I truly believe that:
“your career progression is something that must be deliberately constructed, and regularly reviewed, evolved, and renewed”.
In fact, I go so far as to boldly suggest that personal career construction must become an underlying skill set that all people wishing to survive and thrive in the 21st century must develop in themselves. It is our mission at Career Constructors to help our clients succeed in this critical 21st century undertaking — helping people develop true 21st century literacy in their career progression journey.
The Road to Career Constructors
I bought this company in 2009 when it was branded as Career Coaching International. What attracted me to the company was the solid methodology that it developed to help people find their “perfect job”; part of the methodology utilized a proprietary personality & work style profiling tool (the PAVF) that I fell in love with and which is a great tool for helping our clients baseline and anchor their career development strategies, in addition to being incredibly helpful in helping work teams perform better.
So, I loved the overall methodology, the PAVF tool, and the general business mission, structure, and streamlined operations.
What I didn’t like was the name. As far as a coaching company goes, Career Coaching International says a lot. However, I personally felt — and still feel — that the coaching industry is a highly fragmented, cluttered, and confusing industry with a somewhat fluffy basic value proposition. For someone like myself who is trained as an engineer and loves the hard edges of business processes and working with high-performance teams, I find the coaching world to be just a bit too unstructured and undirected.
For 6 years I operated the company as Career Coaching International and I used that time for researching, strengthening, and ultimately simplifying the basic methodology we employ; I also actively experimented with different configurations of coaching support and group networking packages to see what worked best for our clients, and I worked on condensing the basic approach to a workshop format to introduce it more effectively to larger audiences. All that has been going on under the hood over several years; in February 2016 I formally relaunched the business as Career Constructors, with a full line of organizational and individual workshops and support packages focused on helping people develop true mastery of their professional careers and, by extension, their lives.
